I believe that students should read the Catcher in the Rye. It is a very well written book that is from the view of a relatable adolescent. Although, students nowadays are feeling that can relate less and less to Holden. The book can help us reflect on adolescents of a different time and show students now that students 30 years ago loved Holden. I think students should read the book because it is well written, relatable, and helps teens reflect.

The Catcher in the Rye is a coming of age story. When J.D Salinger wrote it in 1951 it was one or the first stories of its kind. Also, it uses a lot of colloquial speech for teenagers of that time. Colloquial speech is similar to slang, but can also be phrases such as; “dead as a doornail”.  Some of the highly used words such as “phony” and phrases such as “that killed me” are examples of the colloquial speech used. This is good for students to read because we may not use those terms anymore, but we have created are own over time. Overall, the book is well written and highlights how people of our age spoke in the 1950’s time period.

Also, even though we have learned in class that students are relating less and less to Holden, they still relate. In his time, Holden’s thoughts and actions were viewed as rebellion, while nowadays it may be viewed as whiney. While it is good to have your own views, knowing the views of different people and time periods can help you learn and grow. You can’t have very well rounded opinions if you only know your own. Reading the book through Holden’s perspective can widen our views on the world and help us understand how other people think, which will help us be more understanding. Overall, teens will always be able to relate to Holden, even if it’s just a little, because at some time or another we all feel a little rebellious against our parents, schools, and the people around us.

Overall, I do believe students should read The Catcher in the Rye. It’s a well written book that uses speech from a different point in time and every teen can relate one way or another. It can also help students widen their perspective and become more understanding.
