Here are 5 things that we can learn by reading the first page of the book. In class we talked about 18 different things that you can learn from the first page of a novel, I chose 5 to tell you about.

Style: Right of the bat we are going to have a mix between short and long sentences. However, they most likely be very complex. The narrator use simple adjectives such as nice and touchy.

Tone: The narrator also shows that he/she is somewhat passive about what he is saying. He also shows a little bit of what might be agitation and he seems quite fed up.

Mood: His mood seems somewhat depressed or possibly angry or annoyed.

Diction: His words are quite simple, but we can guess that he will swear extensively. The speaker doesn’t seem to be highly intellectual, although he does seem educated.

Point of view: It is and “I” story and is in First person.

Place: We know that it takes place in America, but we don’t know where. He mentions his brother living in Hollywood. He also mentions that he is not where he was at the time that the story he will tell took place.
